Week 5
SMALL GROUP QUESTIONS:
As followers of Christ, we are called to love God and other people - this plays out a little differently for every individual and for every group, so let’s talk about what it looks like for us.
Read Luke 15. This is a long passage, so feel free to break it up into smaller chunks!
1. What do all three stories have in common?
2. What sacrifices are made to go after “the one” in each story?
3. Why do you think the individuals go after “the one,” despite the sacrifice?
4. What elements are hard to accept about these stories? What elements are encouraging?
At One Life, you’ll hear the phrase “One Life” or “Next One” often. We believe, like these passages, that every one life matters, and that is clear in three ways:
- Jesus gave his one life for all of us.
- We have one life to decide how to respond to that.
- We believe each of us should have at least “one life” - one person that doesn’t know Jesus - to go after and care about, just like in Luke 15.
6. In small ways or big ways, how has God or another person shown you that your life matters?
7. How have you responded, or seen other people respond, to Jesus giving His one life? What does it mean to you to give your one life back to Him?
8. Do you have an individual in your life that you would consider your “one life”? Share a little bit about them, but be respectful about their story - they could be in our church or group some day!
We serve others because their lives matter - to us and to Jesus. Sometimes this is a friend from work or a neighbor or a family member. Sometimes it’s our favorite local barista or someone we meet on an airplane. Sometimes it’s the children in our church, or teenagers, or their parents, or the new person that will walk in One Life’s doors next Sunday.
As our group moves forward, we want to be conscious of our mission. Maybe we figure out how to serve each other’s One Lives. Maybe we all sign up to serve together at church. Maybe we find that we’re passionate about a local issue and serve at a community organization. As we continue to get to know each other and seek God together, let’s be thinking about where He would have us seek others.
We often use the phrase “called,” because we believe God truly calls us to serve others.
8. What kinds of things or people do you find you have a special interest or concern for - what are some areas you think or know God has called you to?
9. Pray that your group would always be open to serving together and that God would give your group a collective mission.
10. Try: Consider finding a tangible way to serve others as a group. It will be a chance for your group to hang out together, serve other people, and be reminded of your mission.
