SMALL GROUP QUESTIONS:

1. Think about a time when you were new somewhere (school, church, job, etc.). What made you feel like you belonged—or what made you feel out of place?

2. Read James 2:1–13. What stood out to you most from this passage or the sermon?

3. James gives a strong warning against favoritism. Why do you think it’s so easy for us to treat certain people differently?

4. The sermon said “high school never really ends.” Where do you still see cliques or “in-groups/out-groups” show up in adult life or church?

5. Have you ever felt overlooked, unseen, or like you didn’t belong? How did that impact you?

6. In the “sweatpants guy” story, what do you think went wrong? What does that reveal about how subtle favoritism can show up?

7. Why do you think James connects favoritism with breaking God’s law?

8. What does “love your neighbor as yourself” actually look like in everyday life?

9. The sermon talked about “standing in the gap.” Where might God be asking you to do that right now?

What makes it difficult to show mercy to others?

10. God has shown each of us mercy. How should that shape the way we see and treat people?

11. This week, intentionally notice someone you might normally overlook and take one step toward them (conversation, kindness, or service). Step into the gap—even if it feels uncomfortable—and let the mercy you’ve received shape how you treat others.
