Get a Life | Week 1
SMALL GROUP QUESTIONS:
1. What is something you were really excited about when you first discovered it—an activity, hobby, food, place, or even a favorite movie or show—and couldn’t wait to tell someone else about?
2. John begins by showing us that Jesus is the Creator who was there “in the beginning” (John 1:1–5). How does understanding who Jesus is change the way you approach Him?
3. The sermon said, “The Creator gets to define the creation” (John 1:1–3, 12–13). What are some areas of life where we can be tempted to decide for ourselves what is true or best instead of allowing Jesus to define those things?
4. Jesus is described as the true Light that shines in the darkness (John 1:4–5, 9). What are some things we tend to rely on for hope, security, or peace that eventually “burn out”?
5. When life gets difficult, what do you personally tend to put your hope or trust in before turning to Jesus? How does John 1:5 encourage you when life feels dark?
6. The people of Jesus’ day thought Rome was their biggest problem, but John pointed to sin as the deeper problem (John 1:29; Romans 3:23). Why can it be easier to focus on what needs to change around us rather than what needs to change within us?
7. John calls Jesus “the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world” (John 1:29, 35–36). How does understanding that Jesus came to save us from our sin—not simply to improve our circumstances—affect the way you view His sacrifice?
8. Nathanael declares Jesus to be “the Son of God” and “the king of Israel” (John 1:49). What is the difference between believing Jesus can save you and actually allowing Him to have authority over your life?
9. If Jesus is truly King in your life, what area of your life—your relationships, money, time, decisions, priorities, or future—is most difficult for you to surrender to Him? (John 1:49; John 1:51)
10. Philip invited Nathanael to “Come and see” (John 1:46). Who is one person in your life who may need to encounter Jesus more clearly, and what is one practical way you could invite them to “come and see” this week?
